How it works

Chilled water is produced in the energy centre on your development and travels through underground pipes to your home. The chilled water flows into a Cooling Interface Unit (CIU), usually found in a cupboard within your home.

The CIU transfers energy (in the form of cooling) from our system to your home. The chilled water is pumped through fan coil units – when the air passes through the fan coil unit, it is cooled and circulated around your home.

If the room gets warmer than the thermostat setting, the cooling system kicks in to cool it down to the desired temperature.

After cooling your home, the water goes back to the energy centre to be chilled again, making it sustainable.

Cooling networks are better than regular air conditioning because they use less electricity, produce less CO2, and use less water.

They’re also more sustainable, cheaper to run, and have a smaller environmental footprint compared to traditional air conditioning systems.

Responsibility of the cooling service

Metropolitan is responsible for the network, up to and including the CIU. All CIU servicing and repairs are included in our service at no extra cost to you, so there are no hefty bills to worry about.

If you notice a problem with the system that means you have no cooling throughout your home, just get in touch.

We use two key pieces of information to calculate how much you need to pay

  • The standing charge is a fixed daily amount that contributes towards the upkeep and management of the cooling network. This means cooling is always available whenever you need it.

  • You then pay for the cooling you use, which is recorded by your meter and the unit rate (p/kWh) is applied.

We will also apply VAT, the tax you have to pay when you buy goods or services, at the lower rate of 5%.

The standing charge is applied to your bill as a fixed daily amount. The standing charge contributes towards the upkeep and management of the cooling network. It also helps to smooth your fixed costs throughout the year. Your bills will be higher in the months that you use the cooling service as the unit rate will be applied for the amount you use.

 

The standing charge also covers the upkeep and management of the cooling system and network, as well as maintenance costs.

Running the cooling equipment does require a small amount of electricity to power your cooling interface unit, in the same way your heating interface unit requires power to supply your home with heating and hot water from the network.

Yes. It can be turned off by adjusting your thermostat or on your room controller.

 

Even if you turn off the cooling service, you will continue to pay the daily standing charge, as this covers the upkeep and management of the cooling system and network, as well as maintenance costs.

The CIU will have a cooling meter. This meter has buttons that can be scrolled through; each one displays a different value. The value that needs to be read is kWh which is a total of your usage.
