Metropolitan – Leading District Heat Partner

We’ve been in the heat business since 2006 and have built a team of experts to deliver and manage our district energy networks.

At Metropolitan, we offer district heat as a stand-alone or as part of a complete multi-utility package. All the utilities a development requires – district heat, electricity, water, wastewater and gigabit fibre – designed, installed and operated. Delivered as a single supplier, seamless utility infrastructure solution from initial design to live networks.

Our projects speak for themselves

Why Metropolitan?

We work with the best – we’ve built our own team of leading experts from the industry. We operate at the cutting edge of technology, exploring new options to replace gas and working with Government, the ADE, and the HBF on the future of district energy.

We already have major operational heat networks, delivering heat, hot water and cooling to thousands of homes and commercial premises. We are also currently designing, installing and bringing into service many other exciting large projects across the UK.

The Metropolitan team have between them contracted over 75 ESCo contracts across the UK: constructing, adopting and operating over 500MW of thermal generation plant, with 50MW of CHP supplying over 50,000 homes and over 250,000m² of commercial buildings through decentralised energy networks.

Our Teams have:

  • The engineering expertise to optimise network design and so minimise costs and maximise network efficiency and flexibility
  • Project management capability to ensure the smooth running of the most complex and challenging of projects
  • Full understanding of the financial and legal aspects to develop and deliver robust business plans. Using that insight, we have devised a standard framework to expedite the establishment of effective ESCos to own and operate networks
  • Planning and regulatory experience to ensure our projects meet all requirements

UK-Based Billing and Customer Service

We have a dedicated billing and customer service team with a UK-based call centre attending to the needs of all properties connected to our district energy schemes.

These needs range from basic customer queries to providing 24/7 emergency assistance. Our call centre aims to answer heat customer calls as quickly as possible, with well over 95% of all our inbound calls answered within 20 seconds, and on average our remote meter-read connectivity is 98%.

Dedicated ESCo Project Managers

Each development has its own ESCo Project Manager working to deliver value and the highest service quality to both partners and heat customers on our heat networks.

Each Project Manager will grow with the project. They will be involved before the first heat customer moves in and will become the focal point of Metropolitan when they do. They meet regularly with the parties involved on the developments we serve, as well as running customer events where heat customers can meet them face-to-face. We are definitely not just a name on a bill to our customers.

Multi-Utility Pedigree

Metropolitan is part of the BUUK Infrastructure Group.

BUUK is the leading provider of last‐mile multi-utility networks in the UK. Employing more than 1,700 people and operating networks serving more than 1.6 million homes, as a group we have led the way in opening up the utilities sector to competition and new levels of customer service. We were the first independent company to own networks in each of the gas, electricity, water, district heat, and gigabit fibre broadband utility markets.

Owning and operating all the utility networks for a development enables us to invest for the future and so lower the upfront installation costs for the developer.

The Heat Trust

Each of our district heat networks is registered with The Heat Trust, the industry-led initiative setting outstanding customer service standards.

A Metropolitan scheme was one of the first to be registered with The Heat Trust at its launch in 2015 and we are committed to delivering these standards into the future.

More information on the Heat Trust can be found here.
