Delivering a zero-carbon future

We are leading the industry in implementing decentralised, low-carbon energy systems

The challenge? The drive to reduce carbon emissions. This is now a top priority for the UK, supported and driven globally by governments, planners and heat customers.

The solution – district heat. Locally sourced heating, hot water and cooling. Heat-source agnostic, district heat is the ultimate future-proof means of heating and cooling homes and businesses. District heat networks can be used to meet the latest planning regulations and answer the political and public demand to achieve future net zero. Networks can also be extended and retro-fitted, and heat sources can be exchanged as new innovative technologies become available.

At Metropolitan we are driving change, responsive to technological developments and committed to achieving the most efficient, and sustainable, heat networks solutions for our customers, on both high-rise city living, and low-density, new-build housing and mixed-use developments.

Metropolitan is part of the UK’s leading multi-utility infrastructure group, with over 1.6 million homes connected to our heat, electricity, fibre, water, wastewater, and gas networks.

What is District Heat?

District heat networks can be used to meet the latest planning regulations and answers the political and public demand to achieve future net zero.

From 2025 new homes can no longer be heated by gas boilers. Already our teams are designing heat networks that are powered by several alternatives: including heat pumps, waste heat from industry, biomass and green gases.

Fuel poverty remains a significant issue in the UK. Heat networks are a sustainable solution providing affordable energy to communities, delivering lower fuel bills for consumers, typically a saving of 5%.

District heat is a proven, practical and deliverable answer to heating needs. Scaleable and community-based, heat networks serve all types of developments – residential, commercial and public sector.

What do we offer?

Designing, installing and running heat networks – it’s what we do

Metropolitan offers developers a complete end-to-end service. We can handle everything for you, from initial enquiry through to operating, and ongoing management of the completed heat network.

We have the knowhow and extensive experience to bring your project to successful completion. Our teams have expertise in engineering design, construction, finance, law, project management and customer service.

We understand that each network is unique, presenting individual planning, technical and site challenges. We don’t offer a standard solution. Instead, we seek to maximise the efficiency of each network, to achieve the best value for both developers and end customers.

We have a long-term relationship with every network we design and install. We adopt and then operate the network throughout its lifetime. It’s in our interests therefore to get it right and build quality assets.
